Fall 2011 New/Notes
Hello! As our Fishers Island students enter the first quarter in full academic swing, I am reminded of the importance of planning, reflection, and good organizational prep. Each day, we encourage students to take stock of what has transpired in class and to reflect upon the concepts being taught. In other words, students need to ask themselves the question, “What is the main purpose of this concept, and when can I use this in life”? This gives students a real sense of meaning to the day and the things being taught. As always, we understand that our student lives are very busy, but we further encourage them to commit to service and to be a real part of our community by participating in after school activities.
Our seniors have just taken their last island SAT (hurray for them), and are now beginning to seek letters of recommendation, write essays, and do all that is associated with their next step in life. We know they are a talented group. Go class of 2012! Our Juniors have just taken their PSAT on 10/12/11 along with Sophomores @ the Community Center, and will soon receive their own copy of the Fishers Island Post Secondary Planning Guide. This is a critical year for Juniors and this document will help as they plan out their strategy for a successful transition year to graduation. Their spring SAT will be on 6/02/12 and the registration (online @ College Board) deadline is 5/08/12. See Mr. Amaral for details. In addition, now is the time to focus on grades and the creation of a strong Junior year transcript.
For our younger students, this is not only a time to focus on reading for enjoyment to strengthen literary skills, but a time to make a pledge to get the most out of the improved contemporary Fishers Island curriculum that college admission officers are telling me gives them a distinct advantage over a traditional curriculum. Our graduation requirements have been heightened to reflect the challenges our graduates will meet along the way, as they plan their future paths. They will be ready to meet those head on!
Lastly, I sincerely hope students are taking full advantage of the NAVIANCE program with respect to career/college exploration. Student profiles should be updated each year to reflect accomplishments and service etc. Please see Ms. Bean or Mr. Amaral if passcodes are forgotten! As always, I am “on island” Wednesday through Friday of each week. Please call or e-mail me if questions arise.
