NYS Seal of Biliteracy Program

November 7, 2023

Dear Parents:

We are delighted to inform you that Fishers Island School will be reinstating our New York State Seal of Biliteracy Program (NYSSB Program)

All students who complete 12th-grade Spanish have the opportunity to earn a seal of biliteracy (at no cost to the student), which will appear on their diploma as well as on their high school transcript. This prestigious addition to one’s credentials was established by the NYS Legislature and is issued by the New York State Department of Education in recognition of high school graduates who have attained an “intermediate mid” level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English and in at least one other language (in our school’s case, Spanish).

For more information on this program, please refer to the
Program Description, or visit the NYSSB website at https://www.nysed.gov/world-languages/new-york-state-seal-biliteracy-nyssb

Students wishing to participate in this program must apply at the beginning of their senior year. If your child wishes to participate in this program, click here for the letter of intent and submit to me no later than 17 November 2023.

Please do not hesitate to contact me by email (
y.gello@fischool.com) if you have any questions about the program.

Sincerely,
